Face-rating and glow-up apps: what's free, what's locked, and what reviewers complain about
Of 1,559 one- and two-star App Store reviews of 12 face-rating and glow-up apps from the last 24 months, 1,054 (67.6%) mention paying, price or a subscription, and 485 (31.1%) say the score, report or scan result was locked until they paid. In a check of 14 listings, 6 of the 13 listed in the US store say in their own description that results, scans or features need a subscription or purchase. Written reviews skew negative and are not star ratings.
Listing check of 14 apps, plus 2,174 written App Store reviews of 12 apps (4 Oct 2024 to 2 Oct 2026)
Appearance apps such as face-rating, "looksmaxxing" and glow-up apps are among the most downloaded lifestyle apps. We asked two questions: what do these apps say you get for free, and what do unhappy users write about?
Written reviews are not ratings. Apple's review feed returns written reviews only, and written reviews are much more negative than star ratings. The 71.7% low-star share in this sample is not any app's rating, and "scam" is the reviewer's word, not ours.
Key findings
- Most negative reviews are about paying. Of 1,559 reviews rated 1–2★ in the last 24 months, 1,054 (67.6%) mention paying, price or a subscription.
- Many specifically say results were locked. 485 (31.1%) say the score, report or scan result was locked until they paid.
- Many use words like "scam", "fake" or "misleading". That is 469 (30.1%) of low-star reviews. This measures how reviewers felt; it is not a finding about any app.
- Scans that never finish are a distinct theme. 224 (14.4%) describe scans stuck on loading, errors or no result after paying.
- Billing complaints show up too. 178 (11.4%) mention unexpected charges, trials that converted, or refunds.
- Inconsistent scores are less common. 69 (4.4%) say scores were inconsistent or inaccurate, but our hand check found this rule only 60% precise.
- Listings often say results need payment. Of the 13 apps listed in the US store, 6 say in their own description that analysis results, scans or features need a subscription or purchase. 11 list a weekly-priced in-app purchase.
Percentages are shares of 1–2★ reviews, and one review can fall into several categories.

What reviewers say
- "Should've said I had to pay to get my results before submitting photos."
- "I didn't get my facial analysis after a payment."
- "I don't get the same results every time."
- "…it will just make you insecure."
What this suggests
- The main frustration is timing. People say they don't mind paying, but they object to finding out after they have answered questions and uploaded photos.
- Paying and then getting nothing does the most damage. Scan failures after payment come up again and again.
- Most people don't ask for perfect scores. Inconsistency is a smaller theme than access and payment.
Method
- Apps reviewed (12 with written reviews): Umax – Become Hot, Umax AI: Face Scan & PSL Rating, LooksMax AI, LooksMax Face Rating AI (LooxUP), Areum, Maxxing, PSL – Looksmax & Ascend, Facemetrics AI, UCHAD, Looksglo, Glow AI Scanner and Drape.
- Listing-only apps: Glow Up App – AI Face Rating had no written reviews, and Glow AI – Look Your Best was unavailable in the US, so both appear only in the listing table.
- Our app is excluded: Presence is not in the data.
- Source: Apple's public customer-review RSS feed (most-recent sort, up to about 500 reviews per app per storefront). Storefronts: US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand and Ireland. Collected on 4 Oct 2026. App IDs were confirmed with the iTunes Lookup API, and listing text and in-app purchases came from the US App Store pages on the same day.
- Sample: 3,188 written reviews were collected. This analysis uses the 2,174 dated 4 Oct 2024 to 2 Oct 2026, of which 1,559 are rated 1–2★.
- Categorisation: published keyword rules (regular expressions) applied to the review title and text. Reviews can match more than one category. Every rule is listed in the CSV download below.
- Hand checks: we read 20 random matches per category and counted how many the rule got right: money-related 100%, results locked 95%, "scam/fake" wording 100%, scan failures 95%, billing 95%, score inconsistency 60% and insecurity concerns 70%.
- Earlier work: Real World Appeal published a larger US-only analysis of face-rating app complaints (2,758 reviews of 25 apps, collected 10 Sep 2026). It is worth reading alongside this one: Face rating app reviews, analysed (Real World Appeal).
Limitations
- Written reviews are much more negative than star ratings. Several of these apps have App Store averages above 4.5★ from tens of thousands of ratings, yet most of their recent written reviews are 1–2★. The 71.7% low-star share in this sample is not any app's rating.
- "Scam" is the reviewer's word, not ours. We make no claim about any app's practices.
- The apps don't contribute equally. Pooled numbers weight the apps with the most reviews heavily. We chose not to publish per-app complaint numbers or rank apps.
- Prices shift. Listing prices and IAP lists vary by region and change often.
Data and downloads
Download the data (CSV): pooled category counts for the 24-month window and for all collected reviews, sample sizes, star and storefront breakdowns, hand-check precision and the keyword rule behind each category. Per-app rows give sample sizes only.

How Presence approaches these issues
Disclosure: Presence is our app. Everything below comes from its App Store listing.
- Free results: three scores are free, with full results you can save and share: First Impression, Aura and Grooming. More analyses and the full Presence Score breakdown come with Presence Pro, available weekly, annually or as a one-time lifetime purchase.
- No account: none is required.
- Privacy: every analysis runs on the iPhone. The listing states that no photos, audio or personal data leave the device. There are no ads.
Honest caveats: Presence is new and has no ratings yet. It focuses on how you show up (first impression, grooming, aura, outfits). Like any photo-based analysis, its results depend on the photo you give it.
